Any website still running on PHP version 5 at the end of 2018 is in danger of being exploited.

Support for PHP 5.6.x ends on December 31, 2018, after which websites still using the outdated PHP will find itself susceptible to attackers looking vigorously for security flaws to exploit vulnerable websites.

The imminent end-of-life of PHP version 5 is a ‘ticking time bomb’. When a software product reaches EOL (end of life), it is no longer supported by software developers. So even if a security hole in the software is discovered, it will not be fixed.

Consider that almost 80% of all websites run on PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor), it becomes apparent how crucial it is to keep up-to-date on the latest PHP version.  When support for PHP 5.6 ends in 2 months, it could put millions of websites at risk. ANY website running on old PHP will be vulnerable to hackers or spammers due to security holes, incompatibility or outdated coding.

Many corporations, small to mid-sized businesses and home businesses have discovered the versatility of Content Management Systems (CMS) that use PHP for functionality, such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. Using PHP 5 Becomes Dangerous in 2 Months

WordPress and many other CMS use PHP, an open source general-purpose scripting language powering all types of web development. PHP enables the generation of dynamic page content, collects and encrypts data, manages your website files and more.

It is highly suggested to upgrade to PHP version 7 quickly, not only because it is EOL, but because there are many bugs in PHP 5 that relate to performances, memory usage and more. PHP 7 will make your website run faster, be more stable and run more efficiently.

Look at updating to PHP version 7 as a sort of 2000-mile checkup – just as a car starts to run rough or could even break down if regular oil changes and tune ups are missed, your website will not run optimally or could even break if you fail to regularly maintain its engine!

If all of this is still Greek to you, contact your website developers and talk with them about which version of PHP your website is running on. Be firm that you want to upgrade to PHP 7 before the new year arrives!

  2. You’re not there to do business. Networking is a social and business gathering but you’re not there to just sell your products or services. Make sure to establish a relationship first so you can hopefully gain long-term clients in the future.
  3. Focus on 2-3 quality interactions. Listen when you join a conversation, then show you were listening by asking follow up questions. Make it about them, because it shows you care about making a meaningful interaction.
  4. Give more than take. You’re not there to just collect the business cards, so make sure you get to know people and leave a good lasting impression about you and your business. Ask questions and how you can help the people you’re talking to rather than making it all about yourself.
  5. Make notes on business cards. If you’re having trouble remembering people, write down important facts or things they mentioned on the business card they gave you. It will help you remember next time you see each other or when having a phone follow up.
  6. Set up at least one quality follow up meeting. Do it within the first 48 hours of meeting before they completely forget about you.

If your ultimate goal is to grow your business through new clients and sales, it’s time to consider running a Facebook contest. Here’s everything you need to know about setting up and running one: 

Determine Your Goal 

  • Lead Generation – If your goal is to collect more email addresses for your newsletter or email promotion blast, a Facebook contest is a great tool for that.  
  • Getting new customers – Offer a new discount or promotion to those who sign up for your contest.  
  • Growing your account – Ask your entrants to like your business Facebook page when participating in the giveaway. 
  • Promoting an exclusive offer or a sale – Offer a product or service that’s already on sale as a giveaway prize to get people interested in what your business has to offer.

 

Choose a Giveaway Prize: 

Offer a relevant prize to all your potential customers, in other words – entice them to enter your Facebook contest. The goal is to give away something that people will be willing to take action for. Furthermore, your prize should be relevant to your target audience, so make sure to allocate an appropriate amount towards a prize (product or free service).

 

Select an Entry method: 

Don’t ask for too much from your participants, so they don’t get discouraged or confused. Be clear and direct about how to enter your giveaway. We recommend sharing up to 3 rules of entry:

Check Facebook Contest Rules to make sure that your promotion doesn’t violate any platform rules, such as ‘Acknowledgement that the promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook.’ 

 

Promote Your Facebook Contest: 

  • Pin the Post – Make sure your giveaway post is pinned to the top of your page for the duration of the contest and when you announce the winner. 
  • Facebook Ad and Boosting – Put some money into running an ad or boosting your giveaway post on Facebook to reach more people and to target the right audience. 
  • Social Media – If your business is active on other social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat), let your followers know about your Facebook contest as well. There’s a good chance they will be willing to enter on Facebook if they’re already active users on those platforms. 
  • Blog – Write a blog post detailing the contest and the prize or include a blurb about the opportunity at the end of an article you’re currently promoting.
